Barrow
Lodge
From 1948 until 1967, Barrow Lodge was Ruth and
Morton Barrow's "Family Playcationland" in Bushkill, Pennsylvania.
A unique combination of summer resort and day camp,
the name holds pleasant memories for past guests and employees alike. The
resort closed after the federal government purchased the land for the ill-fated
Tocks Island dam project. All that remains of the 80-plus acre complex
is woodland, now part of the National Park Service's Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area. |
K3WPI
The call, originally issued as KN3WPI in January
1963,
marked the beginning of an exciting, new hobby for a 14-year-old junior
high school student. The youth wanted desperately to upgrade before his
Novice license expired after its year term. Copying the code test at the
FCC office in Philadelphia during a blizzard in 1964, he passed the General
Class test. He earned the right to drop the "N," and his call for over
thirty years was K3WPI. He
eventually upgraded to Extra, and in 1996 he surrendered the call in preference
to K3IW. |

Barrow
Lodge QRP Group
In November 1998 the group was organized to promote
the challenge, fun and rewards of low-power operating and the Amateur Radio
hobby. Barrow Lodge symbolizes comfort, hospitality and the joy of friends
gathering to enjoy their hobby and each other's company.
It keeps alive Ruth and Morton's spirit and their legacy as innovators
in the hospitality industry. Thanks to the FCC's Vanity Callsign program,
the call K3WPI returned to the Barrow family. In December 1998 it became
the Barrow Lodge QRP Group's club call.
Members accept lifetime appointments, and BLQRPG
meets for the express purpose of operating.
